A Conversation about Housing Co-ops

Affordable housing access is being called a crisis in many areas across the country, and housing cooperatives can be a powerful part of the solution.  The Indiana Cooperative Development Center hosted a one day “conversation about housing co-ops” in spring 2018 in partnership with Cinnaire and Neighborhood Development Associates to educate Indiana developers and financiers about the potential of the housing co-op model.

Topics ranged from the definition of a cooperative, to the legal aspects of forming a housing co-op, to financing and funding housing co-ops with expert presenters from the Midwest and beyond.  The conference closed with the creation of concrete next steps for how to continue to raise the profile of housing co-ops in Indiana.

Housing co-ops come in all shapes and sizes, giving people a wide variety of options. They run the gamut from high rise apartments, to condominium clusters, and single home dwellings that accommodate students, senior citizens, artists, people with disabilities, and families. They are often located in areas where housing can be costly, making it possible for those who might not otherwise be able to afford it, to have greater access to the amenities in an attractive city or town. Most housing co-ops are so popular that they have waiting lists of people who want to live in them.
